Sedation Dentistry
When a patient suffers from dental anxiety, dental phobia, or other dental conditions, varying degrees of dental sedation can be utilized. There are many reasons patients consider sedation dentistry. People who have high fear, have had previous traumatic experiences, hate needles and shots, have difficulty getting numb, have very sensitive teeth, have complex dental problems, or have a bad gag reflex can benefit tremendously with sedation.

Oral Conscious Sedation

If you are interested in oral conscious sedation, please watch the video below which explains sedation and interviews patients who have gone through the sedation process.

Patients no longer have to be anxious of the dentist. Getting the treatment you need can be done easily while you are totally relaxed and comfortable.

Oral sedation has many benefits that make getting your dentistry possible. Being sedated using oral medications means there are not IV needles. While you do not actually sleep during treatment, you will be sedated just enough to make you totally relaxed and at ease. One of the best parts is that by the next day, most people remember little-to-nothing of the time they spent in the dental chair. Gone are memories of the sights, sounds and smells of the office that are often so traumatizing.

With sedation dentistry, time seems to pass very quickly so hours feel like minutes. It is a great option if you need a large amount of dental care completed at one time. Oral sedation enables your dentist to work more efficiently and complete more treatment in fewer visits, reducing four or five appointments to just one or two.

Other Options for Sedation

NuCalm

NuCalm naturally relaxes the mind and body during your dental treatment without the use of drugs or gas. It naturally interrupts the stress response and guides you to a deep relaxation.

Think about how you feel as you lay down to go to sleep. You slowly begin to relax - you can feel gravity pulling you deeper into your bed and pillow, you may have dreams, you may experience neuromuscular releases (body parts twitching) where you have built up lactic acid, and you will begin deep breathing. This experience is the Alpha stage of sleep which is the exact stage you will be in throughout your NuCalm experience. With NuCalm, you will be in the dental chair getting treatment, but you will be so relaxed that you will not focus on the dentistry. Many patients have a great dental experience and leave the office feeling refreshed.

The benefits of using NuCalm include:

  • • You will be in a state of deep relaxation for the entire procedure
  • • You will be conscious and able to respond to voice commands during the procedure
  • • Your post-treatment experience will be a feeling of rejuvenation (NuCalm provides a neuromuscular release of bodily tension)
  • • NuCalm does not chemically compromise your central nervous system or cognitively impair your mind. It is less intrusive than sedation techniques.
  • • You can come and go on your own. There are no side effects, no recovery time, or supervision required.

Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous Oxide (N2O) is an odorless gas that combines with oxygen to produce a euphoric feeling, usually within five minutes from administration. With its rapid onset, ease of administration, no "hangover" effect, and history of safety, nitrous oxide is the most commonly used agent to increase patient comfort during dental procedures. It is especially effective in apprehensive children. The biggest advantage is you recover immediately without any residual grogginess associated with other sedation methods.
